Miss Iloilo 2024 revives Rigodon de Honor

Vice Mayor Jeffrey and Girlie Ganzon and Hon. Miguel Treñas and Maria Isabel Layson led the opening of Rigodon de Honor

“Our heritage is not just our past, it is the essence of who we are.”Unknown

Yes, in a well-attended Charity Ball at Iloilo Convention Center, the Miss Iloilo Committee revived Rigodon de Honor. The event was to raise funds for the Miss Iloilo 2024 Pageant in an effort to display Ilonggo unity. It was also a celebration of culture and heritage in couture, gastronomy and arts.

In the backdrop of video images of Old Iloilo and folksy songs, Metro-Iloilo’s veritable movers and shakers came to see and be seen in their finest traditional and stylized Filipiniana outfits. After all, to paraphrase Mayor JERRY P. TREÑAS, “Iloilo City is where the past is always present.”

The Charity Ball’s gastronomy treat was a collaboration of top Ilonggo chefs. It kicked off with cocktails prepared by MIGUEL CORDOVA and followed by a six-course sit down dinner (Ilonggo Inasal in Linutik Soup and Bandi Danggit Salad with Tino-Tino and Batuan Dressing by ARIEL CASTAÑEDA of Richmonde Hotel Iloilo; Entrées of Paella, Callos and Lengua Estofado by DING MONTELIBANO; and Dessert of Guimaras Mango Panna Cotta, Mascuvado Streusel, Cabatuan Tablea Mousse and Grated Tultul by CARLO CO of Hotel del Rio). The treat was in tribute to the UNESCO Creative City Gastronomy Award Iloilo City recently received.

A series of dance performances – Jota, Flamenco and Interpretative Dances – unfolded. Of course, the highlights of the night were the Rigodon de Honor and the Presentation of the Miss Iloilo 2024 Official Candidates.

A dance of sophistication and etiquette, Rigodon de Honor focuses on prestige and status of life. With Western and Eastern influences, it is invariably accompanied by a rondalla group. It is a common practice for the elite to perform this quadrille type cotillion in big events during the bygone era.
