Joe Geraldo at ILOMOCA

“I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.”Vincent Van Gogh

Hulot at Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) is once again a venue of another exhibit worth visisting. ILOMOCA’s first offering of the year, it recently opened and will run till April 28, 2024.

Multimedia artist Joe Geraldo’s “Comfortably Numb” is a one-man show featuring 21 artworks demonstrated using pen and ink. According to the artist, each artwork “present a journey—more than enough to convey a lifetime of values and wisdom he has learned and lived through.” The titles of his pieces could only speak for a part of the whole picture which is exactly how he wishes it to be as they capture the artist’s enigmatic artistic process: “out of this world but purposeful, out of control but brutally honest.”

“Comfortably Numb” focuses on societal indifference. Humanity often prioritizes material gains at the expense of others and the environment, numbing themselves to global issues. The artist aims to enlighten and inspire, emphasizing the importance of love, unity, and compassion for all beings.

His piece de resistance is on a 10 x 25 feet canvas that simultaneously draws you in and pushes you back. Called boldly by the artist, “The Fields of Lies and Hates”, it reveals the interconnectedness of practically everything going on; from the good and the bad, right or wrong, big or small, comfortable and numb.

“He called it such because he has freely expressed here his thoughts on the issues of today,” said JP Liboon-Tolentino, Museum Managher at ILOMOCA. “The spirit put into a single line, shape, form, and figure transcends varied interpretations and limitless imaginations whether you are focusing on one portion or taking it all in.”
