A Kruhay Weekend

Interiors of Esprutingkle Business Hotel

No road is long with good company.” – Turkish proverb

Kruhay, Antique! It was one invitation that our gang can’t refuse! Caterer JOEL CATONG invited us for quick getaway at his hometown of San Jose, Antique! We were billeted at Esprutingkle Business Hotel. The boutique hotel, with its kitsch décor and slow, intermittent Wifi, is on the second floor of a shopping center and is located in the town’s center.

Indeed, he gave us a warm welcome by treating us to lunches, dinners and nightouts, and tour of spots away from the usual tourist traps! The road trip took us to Padulasan Adventure Park in Tubudan and Eden Park in Anigalan, both in San Remigio town. Along the way, he enjoyed the view of the lush countryside.

It’s posing time minutes before the fog rolled in!

Minutes after we took photos of the scenic mountain view at the deck of Eden Park, with the help of an drizzle, the thick fog rolled in. It whetted our appetite for a bowl of hothotay. Eden Park also features a strawberry farm, a restaurant with a view deck, rooms and lodges, and a mini strawberry swimming pool.

Another photo op while waiting for our ride to our next destination.

With an elevation of 971.7 meters above sea level, Aningalan lives up to its monicker, Little Baguio of Antique! After all, Antique is where the mountains meet the sea!

The fun part of visiting places is discovering new bars and cafés. As we walked around San José, Antique, we chance upon Leo’s Homemade Ice Cream. We were delighted with the wide range of flavors! I had salted Caramel. The sweetness is right and perfect. And the price is a giveaway – P10 per scoop; you can have them in different flavors in one cup!

After a sumptuous dinner at Esprutingkle Fitness Kaffe, we proceeded to Kampo, a military inspired party place, listened to band music and enjoyed our fave drinks. Our next stop was JB Resto Bar, a hilltop wateringhole that offers aanother scenic mountain view! Yes, we climbed more than 70 steps to have fun. In both bars, “By the Rivers of Babylon,” a 1979 hit by Boney M. set everyone dancing!

Bandi is a highly recommended pasalubong from Antique!

It was wee hours when we decided to call it the night, or was it morning. Waking up early, we again walked around near the hotel looking for a nice place to have breakfast. Then, we chanced upon Amirs Cafe, a tastefully designed small bistro. Its breakfast meals are varied, reasonably priced and tasty. I had Tapsilog and the beef tapa is cured and prepared personally by the owner who was in hand to welcome us. It also serves pasta and pizza combos, a wide range of coffee mixes – from espressos to lattes, and more! When you are in San Jose, Antique, please drop by Amirs Café!

By the way, “Kruhay” is a Kinaray-a term for “Long Live!” Kinaray-a is a native language to Panay Island.
