Dance as Art: The Expressive Movement of the Soul

“The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word.” — Mata Hari

Indeed, it was an evening of art and heritage when Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) honored National Artist for Dance Agnes Locsin in an exhibition called, “Dance is My Life”. It celebrated her extraordinary artistic journey and pioneering Neo-Ethnic dance practice!

In partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Carmen D. Locsin Foundation, this significant exhibition celebrates the remarkable artistic legacy of Agnes Locsin. It offered audiences an opportunity to encounter the depth, richness, and enduring relevance of her contribution to Philippine dance. The exhibition pays tribute to an artist whose groundbreaking work has helped shape the landscape of Philippine contemporary dance. Rooted in Filipino cultural traditions yet boldly contemporary in expression, Agnes Locsin’s practice has forged a distinctive language of movement—one that continues to resonate across generations.

The opening night came in three parts: the formalities and speeches at Vernissage; the dance performance, book signing and exhibition at the 2nd Floor Galleries 1 and 2; and the cocktails at Hulot Gallery and Vernissage.

Agnes Locsin: Dance Is My Life Exhibition is part of the on-going Iloilo Art Fest 2026 at Iloilo Business Park. However, the celebration continues as it is open to the public until January 31, 2027, at the 2nd floor galleries.

“Through photographs, costumes, archival materials and multimedia presentations, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the life, passion, and creative legacy of an artist who has helped shape the landscaper of Philippine dance,” said Maricel Montero, Museum Director of ILOMOCA and Mamu of the local art scene.
